My 2004 Forenza makes this grinding/rattling sound when I start it up for about 30 seconds or so, then stops. I finally got the hood popped in time before it stops to locate where it is coming form primarily. It seems to be coming directly from the place where the engine and the silver metal part meet--the part with the symbol of a hand on it warning not to touch (radiator maybe? Not sure what its called but i hope you get what it is I'm referring to). Any ideas what it could be? Any solutions? Like I said, it stops after about 30 seconds or so or when I give the gas a good push sometimes. Thank you.

It does shimmy a little bit when I start the engine. Where are the bolts for it supposed to be? I think I saw a place where 2 bolts or something came out or were missing. Kind of looks like 2 screws went there. Its not the bolts on the the thing I was talking about but on the engine. Ill take a pic tomorrow, upload it on here and show you. Cant take pic tonight bc it gets dark in PA at like 6 p.m. now.

uploaded the pics of engine

Here are the pics I took yday of the engine. If you look there is 2 places where it looks like a bolt or screw should go. One is in the middle & the other one is on the far right (a hose is blocking direct view). As you can see, the far left side has a bracket on it. The middle and far right, however, don't have anything. Any suggestions or help is appreciated. I may just put two bolts or screws that fit in those holes and see if that stops the wretched loud noise from happening.

the bracket is a hoist point for the motor. the other holes really do nothing thats not where your noise is coming from. if you look under the car at the exhaust pipe there is a heat shield on top of the pipe. thats prob where the noise is comming from. sometimes they break loose and rattle. youll have to just inspect them and see if one looks broken. if one is loose you could just cut it off

7-even, Are you talking about the exhaust pipe shield on the rear of the car before the muffler? If so, I know about that and thats not where its coming from. I took care of that noise a while ago with a clamp. The noise is actually coming from exactly where I described. Dont suppopse there are any ways to clamp this. It only happens when its colder and the car has been sittin gfor hours on end. Any ideas? Is it something I should be worried about or get looked at? Everything seems to running smoothly other than this.

From the pictures I see, unless something seems loose around the 3 bolts (see picture in attachement) that hold that shield, you'll have to look elsewhere.

There is another heat shield for the muffler before the "cat" that could make some noise. Look near the steering rack for it. In my case, I had to add a clamp around it to stop the noise. Guess what, that small part isn't available separately from the flex, intermediate pipe and catalyser... unless I take everything for around 1000$.

Other than that, I've got no idea... might be something worth asking for at your next oil change.
